Madeira: Volcanic Cave & Coastal Escape – a Tuk Tuk Tour
Madeira's volcanic caves are one of the island's best-kept secrets, and we were the first to take guests to this one by tuk tuk — it is still the stop people talk about afterwards. You ride out of Funchal along the coast, then walk through a passage of dark lava rock where the stone glows gold and green under the light, water drips through the ceiling and the openings look straight out over the Atlantic. Choose 1hr for the cave, 1.5hr to add a full Funchal city tour, or 2hr for the cave, the city, the best viewpoints and a tasting — pickup in Funchal is free.

Common Questions
Everything you need to know before your Madeira Tuk Tuk ride.
Where is the volcanic cave in Madeira?
The cave is on the coast just west of Funchal, on the way to Câmara de Lobos — a short tuk tuk ride from the city centre and the cruise port. We pick you up and bring you back, so you do not need to find it yourself.
How long is the Volcanic Cave & Coastal Escape tour?
Choose the 1hr Volcanic Cave Tuk Tuk Tour (the coastal ride and the cave), the 1.5hr Cave + Full City Tour (the cave plus the best places in Funchal, with photo stops) or the 2hr Cave + Tasting + Viewpoints + City (everything, plus the most stunning viewpoints and a tasting).
How much does the volcanic cave tour cost?
€35 per person for 1 hour, €45 per person for 1.5hr and €57 per person for 2hr. Up to 3 guests share a tuk tuk and the 3rd guest in each tuk tuk pays only €20. Groups of 4 to 6 travel in 2 tuk tuks (maximum 6 guests), so the 6th guest also pays only €20. A private tuk tuk for one person costs the same as for two.
Is pickup included?
Yes. Pickup and drop-off are free anywhere in Funchal — your hotel, Airbnb, the Old Town or the cruise ship terminal.
Is the cave walk difficult?
No. It is a short, easy walk on a paved path. The floor can be wet, so wear shoes with some grip. Water sometimes drips through the rock — guests call it the cave's blessing.
Are there volcanic caves in Madeira?
Yes. Madeira is a volcanic island, and its caves were shaped by lava and the sea. The best known are the São Vicente caves on the north coast, about 45 minutes from Funchal. Our volcanic cave tour goes to a hidden lava-rock cave on the south coast, only a short tuk tuk ride from Funchal and the cruise port, so it fits easily into a morning, an afternoon or a cruise stop.
What are the best caves to visit in Madeira near Funchal?
If you are staying in Funchal or arriving by cruise ship, the volcanic cave on the coast towards Câmara de Lobos is the closest cave experience: no long drive, free pickup, and you can add a full Funchal city tour on the 1.5hr option, or the city, viewpoints and a tasting on the 2hr option.
Who started tuk tuk tours to the volcanic cave?
We did. TukTukRides was the first company to run tuk tuk tours to the volcanic cave, and the same tour is listed on GetYourGuide as "Madeira: Volcanic Cave & Coastal Escape – a Tuk Tuk Tour".
How much does a Madeira Tuk Tuk tour cost?
Tours start from €60 per tuk tuk for 1 hour (€50 when you start from 16:00), for up to 2 guests. A 3rd guest is +€20 — the 1st child under 12 rides free, the 2nd is +€15, the 3rd +€30 and so on. Longer tours start from €70. You see the exact price instantly when you book online.
How many people fit in one Tuk Tuk?
Our standard vehicles fit up to 3 adults comfortably. For groups of 4 to 6, we arrange two TukTuks travelling together in a convoy — the booking page updates the price automatically.
Can you pick us up at the Cruise Ship?
Yes! We are specialists in Shore Excursions. We monitor ship arrival times and pick you up directly at the port gate. We guarantee to have you back on board on time!
Do I need to book in advance?
We highly recommend booking at least 24 hours in advance, especially during the summer and Christmas season, as our slots fill up quickly. Last-minute? Message us on WhatsApp and we will do our best.
How do I pay?
Whatever suits you: pay securely online by card, reserve now and pay on the day (card or cash), or book directly via WhatsApp. 1.5hr and 2hr tours get an automatic 15% discount when paid online by card.
Can I cancel or change my booking?
Yes — cancellation is free. To change the date, time or tour, just message us on WhatsApp and we will update your booking at no cost.
What happens if the weather is bad?
Our TukTuks are covered, so tours run comfortably in light rain. If conditions are not safe or enjoyable, we will contact you to reschedule for free — or cancel with no charge.
Are children welcome?
Absolutely — families love the TukTuk! The 1st child under 12 rides free, the 2nd is +€15, the 3rd +€30 and so on — and a child in the 3rd seat does not pay the +€20 3rd-seat supplement. Every child takes a seat like any passenger (up to 3 per tuk tuk) and must be accompanied by an adult. Let us know their ages when booking and we will take care of the rest.
What language do the drivers speak?
Our local drivers speak English and Portuguese, and love sharing stories, history and the best photo spots along the way.
